Trump fears 'major, major conflict' with North Korea

US President Donald Trump has said he would like to solve the North Korea crisis diplomatically, but that a "major, major conflict" is possible.
In an interview with Reuters he praised China's President Xi Jinping for his handling of North Korea, calling him "a very good man" who loved his country.
Mr Trump also said it had been "very hard" for Kim Jong-un to take over North Korea at such a young age.
The UN Security Council is meeting to discuss North Korea on Friday.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington would negotiate with North Korea, with a view to removing nuclear weapons from the country, not changing the government.
He told NPR radio in the US: "We do not seek regime change, we do not seek a collapse of the regime, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula.
"We seek a denuclearised Korean peninsula - and that is entirely consistent with the objectives of others in the region as well."

US Ambassador Commends Military’s Counter Insurgency Efforts

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Steward Symington has commended troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and members of their families, for the great job and sacrifice in combating insurgency and terrorism in the North East Nigeria.

Ambassador Symington gave the commendation in Maiduguri, during his visit to the headquarters, Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole.
The Ambassador pointed out that only Nigerians can best fight and defeat the insurgence against the country, which could only be attained with the support of all Nigerians.
He enjoined Nigerians to take the lead in loving and caring for their country and other people will follow suit.
Meanwhile, the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor expressed appreciation to the United States military for its support and partnership with the Nigerian Military in the fight against insurgency in the North East.
He averred that Operation Lafiya Dole had made tremendous success in combating the insurgents and liberating areas that were hitherto held by the dissident group in early 2015, adding that currently, no Local Government in the north east is under control of the insurgents.
General Irabor however noted, that the fleeing insurgents have callously resorted to attacking soft targets, employing Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) conveyed by vulnerable women, young girls and boys.
He disclosed that the situation is being mitigated with continuous awareness and sensitization campaign, to enlighten members of the public and shore up their security consciousness.
The Theatre Commander urged all mobilization and sensitization agencies of government to collaborate with the military in its awareness and enlightenment campaign, to further counteract Boko Haram IED attacks.
He reiterated the unwavering resolve of the officers and men of Operation Lafiya Dole to ensure that insurgency in the North East becomes a thing of the past.

Buhari Following His Doctors Orders – Presidency

The Presidency has said President Muhammadu Buhari is taking things slowly based on the directive of his doctors.
This comes a day after the President again missed the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting, sparking fresh fears about his health.
In a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Presidency said, “As eager as he is to be up and about, the President’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago.
“President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London.
“Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday.”
Although the President requires more time to fully recover, the Presidency said there was no need for worry about his health.
“Despite the insinuations of a number of media organisations, there is no need for apprehension over the health of our President, Muhammadu Buhari,” it said.
It explained that Buhari’s absence at the Federal Executive Council meeting of Wednesday, April 26, was a last minute decision “otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance”.
The presidency assured Nigerians that although the President was very visible, he was playing his role and receiving daily briefings on the activities of government and confers regularly with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
It added, “His private residence, in which he has been spending the majority of his time recently, also has a fully equipped office.”

Buhari Seeks National Assembly Approval For $6.9bn Loan

President Mohammadu Buhari has written to both chambers of the National Assembly, seeking approval for a 6.926 billion dollar loan by the Federal Government.
The letter was read in both chambers, by the Senate President in the Senate and the Speaker in the House of Representatives.
According to the President, 5.851 billion dollars of the loans will be from the China Exim Bank for major railway projects across the country.
He added that 1.75 billion dollars would be provided by the World Bank for procurement of polio vaccine, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the north eastern part of the country.

Journalists Barred From Covering Kanu’s Trial

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has resumed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Journalists, have however, been barred from covering the ongoing trial of the self-acclaimed leader of the IndigenousPeople of Biafra (IPOB).
This is against the earlier judgement by the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, who ruled that the trial should not be secret.
The street leading to the Federal Capital High Court has being barricaded by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department Of State Services, the police and officials of the Nigeria Prisons Services.
The trial is on-going without media coverage.
Nnamdi Kalu is standing trial alongside three other pro-Biafra agitators for treason.
Meanwhile, there was mild drama in court as a former minister was prevented from witnessing the today’s ruling.

Buhari Not Harassing Jonathan’s Family – Presidency

The presidency has denied reports that the Buhari-administration is harassing Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan and his family.

“We make bold to state unequivocally that President Buhari harasses nobody; he merely allows the law to take its course,” Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said in response to a report which claimed that Jonathan accused Buhari of harassing him in his new book.
“For the umpteenth time, we say that anybody without skeleton in his or her cupboard, has nothing to fear about the bared fangs of the anti-corruption initiative. Fear belongs only to those who have abused trust while in office.”
Adesina defended the President’s anti-graft war, saying that he remains committed to the mandate given to him by Nigerians.
“With regard to President Buhari’s anti-graft style, which the former president deprecates, given the scale of revelations and recoveries so far by the anti-corruption agencies, it is obvious that corruption had an uninhibited course during our recent past.
“In any case, time will give the verdict on whose style of fighting corruption ultimately yielded the most dividends. For now, President Buhari is resolute and single-minded in the fact that his crusade against graft is not targeted at any individual or group. He firmly believes that national interest must always be placed above personal interest, no matter who is involved,” the statement read.
